Why diagnostic precision accelerates improvement
Advanced learners often collect large amounts of feedback but improve slowly because their notes mix different kinds of evidence. A teacher comment about an unclear overview belongs to Writing Task 1 and primarily concerns Task Achievement. A comment about an underdeveloped position belongs to Writing Task 2 and concerns Task Response. Neither comment can be transferred automatically to Speaking, where the public criteria are Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.
A reliable diagnostic statement therefore has four parts: the task, the relevant criterion, an observable feature and its consequence. “My vocabulary is weak” is not diagnostic. “In two Part 3 answers, I repeated general adjectives when I needed precise language to distinguish causes from consequences” identifies both context and effect. This makes the repair action easier to choose.
Prioritisation matters because not every weakness deserves equal attention in the same week. A recurring problem that prevents task completion normally has greater immediate value than an occasional stylistic limitation. The learner should test one repair repeatedly, retain evidence from new attempts and then decide whether the behaviour changed. This produces a defensible development record without pretending that one short sample determines an official band score.
Evidence check: A useful diagnosis identifies the paper and task, names the relevant criterion, cites observable evidence and selects one action that can be repeated and measured. Before answering, identify the exact sentence that controls the claim and confirm that population, degree, time frame and stance remain unchanged. Reject any option that is merely related to the topic but does not preserve the complete relationship. Record the decisive wording so that the decision can be checked rather than reconstructed from memory.
