Skill Checkpoint 2: Task Instructions and Types
Read each question slowly. Find the instruction word, decide what action it asks for, then choose one answer only.
5 min
What to do
- Read each question slowly.
- Find the instruction word, such as complete, match, or choose.
- Ask: What action does this word tell me to do?
- Choose one answer only for each question.
Why this matters
In IELTS, many wrong answers happen because the learner misses the instruction. The instruction helps you choose the correct answer.
Quick reminder
An instruction is the part of the task that tells you what to do. It is like a command.
- Complete means fill in missing information.
- Match means connect two sets of items.
- Choose means select from the options.
- Word limit means the number of words you can write.
Worked example
Instruction: Complete the table. Write ONE WORD ONLY for each answer.
Sample answer behaviour: Write one missing word in each table gap.
Why it works: The word complete tells you to fill the gaps. The phrase ONE WORD ONLY tells you not to write two words or a full sentence.
Task guidance
- Find the instruction word.
- Say the meaning in simple words.
- Remove answers that do not match the instruction.
- Choose one answer.
How success is measured
- You can explain what complete, match, and choose mean.
- You choose one answer for each question.
- You check limits such as one answer or word limit.
- You score 3 out of 4 or better.
Common mistakes
- Reading the topic but missing the action word.
- Choosing two answers when the task says choose one answer.
- Writing a long answer when the task asks for a short word, number, or option.
