Why this matters
IELTS tasks tell you what to do. If you miss the instruction word, you may give the wrong kind of answer.
Concept explanation
An instruction word tells you the action. It tells you to choose, complete, match, write, or identify.
- Choose: pick from a list.
- Complete: fill a gap.
- Match: connect two things.
- Write: put words in the answer space.
- Identify: find and name something.

Why it works: Complete means fill the gap. ONE WORD ONLY means do not write two words or a sentence.
Task
First, say one instruction word aloud. You do not need to Write the speaking part.
Then write one short instruction in the response box using one word from the list.
Use this frame:

You can use: Choose, Complete, Match, Write, Identify.
How success is measured
- You know the meaning of at least three instruction words.
- Your written instruction uses one correct action word.
- Your sentence is short and clear.
Common mistakes
- Writing two words when the task says ONE WORD ONLY.
