Pathway: Make “this/these” point to one clear noun (WT2)

5–10 min
Read 3 of 10

What to do⏱ 5–10 min

Objective

Replace vague “this/these” with a precise noun phrase.

Steps

 1. Read the explanation and the weak vs improved example.
 2. Complete the short task in your own words (3–5 sentences unless stated).

Clear reference

⏱ ~6 min · WT2

Problem: “This” can confuse the reader if two ideas are possible.

Weak: “Governments fund hospitals. This helps the economy.” (What is “this”—health or funding?)

Improved: “Government funding for hospitals improves public health. This investment can reduce emergency waiting times.”

Reflection
 • Rewrite the weak version in two sentences, replacing “This” with a precise noun phrase (no “this/these”).

Self-check

 • You addressed only this one problem.
 • You produced a new example, not copied text.

Common mistakes to avoid

 • Using “this” twice in a row with different meanings.
 • Hiding the main noun inside a long clause.
