What to do⏱ 5–10 min
Objective
Identify every part of the question before you plan your thesis.
Steps
- Read the explanation and the weak vs improved example.
- Complete the short task in your own words (3–5 sentences unless stated).
Answer every part
⏱ ~7 min · WT2
Prompt: “Some people think unpaid community work should be compulsory for teenagers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?”
Three jobs: (1) react to “compulsory community work”, (2) say how much you agree, (3) support with reasons/examples.
Weak plan: “I will write about volunteering.” (Misses “compulsory” and “teenagers”.)
Strong plan line: “I disagree with compulsion, but I support optional service for teenagers.”
Reflection
- List three instruction words you must answer from the prompt above (single words or short phrases). Then write one thesis sentence that hits all three.
Self-check
- You addressed only this one problem.
- You produced a new example, not copied text.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Writing a beautiful introduction that ignores “to what extent”.
- Treating the essay as “about volunteering” generally.
